New Age of Streaming Video

Live online streaming is really at the peak of it’s technological breakthroughs and now it is up to the masses to take that technology and figure out the best use for it. I read a lot about big corporations dipping their toes in every once in awhile, but seem legitimately scared to plunge in and change the game like we all want them to do.

What is holding them back and what can we do to help them take that jump into our world. Is it something that we can do as broadcasters/viewers or is this really a job for the Content Delivery Networks? I really question our great CDNs more and more as time goes by because I cannot for the life of me pin down where they have their focus and/or company direction.

USTREAM doesn’t care about anything but celebrities broadcasting about the latest car they got, Livestream doesn’t seem to have much focus on users or community at all, and Justin.tv is becoming Qik, basically going back to their roots of mobile broadcasting/viewing. What is the general gameplan here people? I appreciate you putting so much faith in the people to carry you, but in all honesty we can’t. We need you to show your best hand as much as you should expect us to provide your network with high quality content streams. It’s give and take people. In any case, the current course is not the best one by far.

Live video is undoubted hard to categorize and organize. Most live broadcasts don’t have a set schedule, don’t have a set topic, and (forgive me for saying this) most live video isn’t worthy of promotion. Even a lot of my work using live video is 75% trash content. I’m usually testing out new gear or fixing some settings. Every now and then I’ll get some users watching me confused and frustrated and I’ll engage with them. That happens for me 1 out of 50 streams.

There needs to be a type of level system not a self-categorizing system we are currently using. When I’m browsing streams I want to see a version our Foursquare badges next to the title. Are they consistently on? Are they HD? Are they even hardcore gamers or are they like me and game to test?

Give me more options to select what to watch. Don’t make me go to each channel get frustrated that it’s not what was advertised and switch to a new one and repeat and repeat until I’ve given up and go back to reading RSS feeds or watching YouTube.

I want this to succeed the way that YouTube and Hulu have. I want nothing more than to make my life easier as a live producer and as a viewer to be part of a larger community. A community dedicated to serving a live audience with exactly what they want, but I can only do so much alone.
